The arithmetic, in one line

height = width × ratio-height ÷ ratio-width. At 16:9 that is width × 9 ÷ 16: 1280 becomes 720 exactly, while 1000 wants 562.5 — not a whole pixel, so the calculator reports 563 and says it rounded. Both figures in this paragraph are computed at build time by the same tested engine that powers the calculator, so the copy cannot drift from the code.

Frequently asked questions

How is 16:9 height calculated from a width?

Multiply the width by 9 and divide by 16. 1280 × 9 ÷ 16 = 720, which is why 1280×720 is the canonical thumbnail size. The same arithmetic powers this calculator, so the tool and this answer cannot disagree.

What if the result is not a whole number?

Then no exact pixel height exists for that width at that ratio — 1000px wide at 16:9 wants 562.5px. The calculator shows the exact value and the nearest whole pixel, and marks the result as rounded. For pixel-perfect 16:9, pick a width divisible by 16.

Which widths give whole-pixel 16:9 heights?

Multiples of 16: 640→360, 1280→720, 1600→900, 1920→1080, 2560→1440, 3840→2160. Every width in that list divides evenly, which is exactly why the standard video sizes look the way they do.

Why do the other ratios matter for thumbnails?
